Located off the Middle Lagoon Road on the Dampier Peninsula, Mercedes Cove Aboriginal Corporation is currently harvesting Gubinge (Terminalia Fernandiana) picked by hand and collected through the innovative use of nets. The Gubinge trees are located right on the coastline along the edge of red cliffs in an enrichment setting, and are sorted into two grades-larger than 3cm, and smaller than 3cm. In this natural setting, the gubinge trees are not exposed to pollutants, pesticides or chemicals.
The fruit is washed with a mixture of water and vinegar, sorted and graded and then stored in 3kg bags and frozen.
Mercedes Cove anticipates harvesting over one tonne of gubinge this season, with the larger fruit better suited to the restaurant market while the smaller fruit for puree and powder processing.
